Excerpt from Chapter 5 – “Questions—Lots of Them”:
What follows are some questions and some answers to the
overall process and events. You will be enlightened as to
what to expect during the journey.
What happens in a chemo session? Some chemo sessions are
administered at the doctor’s office; others are performed at an infusion
center. Both are similar in the process, and some are decorated
a little more lavishly than others. After a small greeting, you are
escorted to a private room or a lounge with several reclining chairs.
While you lounge in the comfortable chair, your port is medically
cleaned and wiped with a medical swab, and an IV needle is placed
in the port. The port is flushed (cleaned for adequate blood flow),
and a blood sample is taken for immediate blood counts. White and
red counts are very important to the therapy.
